Kingston, Jamaica: April 20, 2009: In the midst of the harsh economic climate where “cut backs” are the order of the day, the Churches Co-operative Credit Union has announced that it will be making several contributions to local churches and charities as part of the “Churches Season of Giving” Campaign Part 1. This campaign includes the “Churches Supporting Churches Project” which focuses on providing assistance towards church related outreach programs.
The bold initiative will see the Credit Union making donations to at least ten (10) churches, charitable organizations and worthy causes as well as carrying out social outreach and providing support for the performing arts throughout the year.
The announcement by the owners of Alumina Partners (Alpart) that they will close the refinery in a month’s time is another piece of bad news that should hardly have surprised anyone, and certainly not the Government.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Faith Innerarity, has appealed to the United Nations, to re-examine its assistance protocol to member states deemed most vulnerable as a result of the global financial crisis.
She said that within the context of the current global crisis, and the challenges to social development, expenditure on essential human capital and protection of the vulnerable, should be enhanced and not compromised.
Mrs. Innerarity was addressing a panel discussion on the impact of the global crisis on social development, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City last week.
