University Players’ Tribute to Trevor Rhone

a_004The University Players’ will pay tribute to the late Trevor Rhone with a staging of his award-winning comedy “Two Can Play” which will be presented for just six performances beginning Saturday October 17th and continuing through to Monday October 26 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.

Two Can Play, a work which won the award for Best Jamaican Play in 1982, features performances by 2008 Actor Boy Award nominees Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott, and is directed by Brian Heap, who also won this year’s award for Best Director. The most recent University Players’ appearance by Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott was in the Players’ memorable production of A. R. Gurney’s Love Letters which was presented earlier this year. “REAL MAN THINGS” TO CAUSE A STIR ON LOCAL RADIO

realmenthing1Kingston, Jamaica – October 12, 2009: “Real Man Things”, a vibrant, exciting radio show that deals expressly with men’s issues, is set to take the local media landscape by storm when it debuts in October. This will be the first radio programme that speaks specifically to male related issues.

The new show will seek to go beyond masculine posturing and bravado to engage Jamaican men, at home and throughout the Diaspora, in honest conversation about the challenges they face as they struggle to cope in a society where they are becoming increasingly marginalised.

Fit for a king – Jamaicans pay tribute to pop legend while Staples Center says final goodbye

gleaner-logoJamaicans were not to be outdone in paying tribute to the king of pop, Michael Jackson, on the day when thousands of persons gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for his memorial service.

Dedicated fans signed a condolence book, set up at the Institute of Jamaica, signalling their final farewell to Jackson.

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, State Senator Vincent Hughes and Businessman Brian Grant to Receive Int’l Community Service Award

Sheryl Lee RalphNEW YORK (JIS) Thursday, April 02, 2009 – Hollywood Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, her husband Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes, and local business leader Brian Grant will be bestowed with the International Community Service Award by Team Jamaica Bickle at a pre-Penn Relays event on April 16, 2009.

Ms. Ralph and Mr. Hughes will be presented with the award because of their leadership in fighting against the spread of HIV and AIDS globally; and Mr. Grant will be presented with the award because of his leadership in increasing business and trade between the Greater Philadelphia region and the Caribbean.
