Mr. Don. Mullings Managing Director of M & M Jamaica Limited on Monday, December 14th, 2009 announced details of his company’s scholarship programme for promising and deserving students.
The scholarships which will benefit over ninety (90) students are funded by M & M Jamaica through its CHANCE FUND, the “ENGINE” established to drive the company’s outreach programme. The programme includes the company’s flagship and very successful Mathematics Competition held in High Schools in the parish of St. Elizabeth and the M & M Entrepreneurs Fund, whereby collateral free financial assistance is given to young persons under the age of thirty (30) to start their own business. Attendance at the first training sessions from the European Union and HEART Trust/NTA’s Banana Sector Retraining Project
155 beneficiaries are enrolled in pre-vocational and skills training held for those affected by the downturn in the banana and plantain industries. Orientation began May 13th in St. Mary, and training in other parishes followed soon after. Banana and plantain farmers, labourers and port workers hope to boost their employability and gain new skills in the Banana Sector Retraining Project, sponsored by HEART Trust/NTA and the European Union.
The project began last October in the six targeted parishes: St. James, St. Mary, St. Thomas, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Portland. It started with career counselling workshops that featured motivational speeches and try-a-skill exercises. Other training activities include pre-vocational and skills training.

New York, NY–The Digicel Foundation, the philanthropic arm of telecom giant Digicel, has given a massive J$8 million grant to the Excelsior Past Students’ Association to help kick start the long-delayed Science Lab building project at the school.
