MOVE OVER BOYS; RADIO SHOW TO RECOGNIZE JAMAICA’S REAL MAN

Real man 1KINGSTON – June 7, 2010 – ‘Real Man Things’, a progressive talk show dealing with male issues, will host its inaugural ‘Real Man Things Award’ on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 20, during its weekly broadcast at 9 pm on Power 106, the Real Man Things Awardee will be recognised and presented with prizes courtesy of Churches Co-operative Credit Union (CCCU).

Real Man Things radio programme is a weekly one hour series broadcast on national radio station, Power 106 FM on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. It has been packaged especially for men, and its themes and topics are chosen to impact pervasive irresponsible, dysfunctional behaviour among Jamaican males. Real Man Things occupies a unique space in the local radio programmes market, not only due to its specific positioning among males, but due to the value added dimension brought by its moderator, Kevin Wallen, a renowned motivational speaker and organizer with impressive experience in community radio and work among incarcerated men.

The award will honour an upstanding and well-respected Jamaican man who exemplifies the successful balance of spiritual, familial and professional commitments. Conceptualized by Winsome Foderingham, an avid ‘Real Man Things’ fan out of the Jamaican Diaspora living in New York, the award will commend the unsung achievements of the ‘everyday man’ who is striving for the betterment of himself, his family and his country. ‘So much energy is spent chastising men for their faults and failures that we felt it was necessary to showcase a man who could serve as an inspirational and refreshing example of someone positively contributing to Jamaican society,’ said Ms. Foderingham. ‘Although we acknowledge the staggering levels of violence, crime and corruption perpetrated by males, we must also recognize the many hard-working, honourable men who enthusiastically execute their responsibilities daily,’ she continued.

In order to kick start the competition, individuals are being asked to nominate men (self nominations are also allowed) who have a strong belief in their Creator and consistently demonstrate honesty and integrity. Nominees should be ambitious and amicable persons, who are family oriented, respected by their peers and reject violence as a means to resolve conflict.

A brief description of no more than 250 words detailing why the candidate should be considered for the award should be submitted along with a photograph. All entries must be sent via email to realmanthings@gmail.com by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16th. Once the applications have been collected, a panel of judges will be responsible for selecting the competition’s top entrant.Real Man

The winner will be awarded cash courtesy of Churches’ and the Reverend Oswald Thorbourne trophy, named after CCCU’s founder, who is also a former Director of the World Council of Credit Unions and past president of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions. In addition to taking part in various TV
and radio interviews and co-hosting a ‘Real Man Things’ show with Kevin Wallen, the successful nominee will also be featured in a Gleaner article.
