FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – March 24, 2010 – The Miss Earth Jamaica organizers urges Jamaicans living at home and those residing in the Diaspora to show their support for climate action by turning off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour.
TckTckTck partner World Wildlife Fund (WWF) started Earth Hour in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more that 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.
In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative. Earth Hour 2010 will continue to be a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to show leadership and be responsible for our future and that of future generations. Miss Earth Jamaica pageant is designed to advance and support the cause of today’s women who
espouse an environmental agenda. Contestants, who become a part of Miss Earth Jamaica, are
savvy, goal-oriented informed and environmentally aware. They are also committed to working
with local and international groups (governmental and non-governmental) that are actively

ABOUT MISS EARTH
Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness. It is
the third largest international beauty pageant in the world in terms of the number of national-
level competitions to participate in the world finals. The reigning titleholders dedicate their year
to promoting environmental projects and to addressing issues concerning the environment.
In 2006, the Miss Earth pageant started to co-host the United Nations Environment Programme’s
Champions of the Earth, an annual international environment awards established in 2005 by the
United Nations to recognize outstanding environment achievers and leaders at a policy level.
The current Miss Earth titleholder is Larissa Ramos from Brazil who was crowned in the
Philippines on November 22, 2009. The tenth edition of the pageant will be held in Nha Trang,
