STATEMENT FROM THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF JAMAICA, NEW YORK REGARDING THE PASSING OF LADY BUSTAMANTE

The Jamaican Consulate General in New York regrets to announce the passing away of Lady Gladys Bustamante on 25 July 2009. She was the widow of our great National Hero, Sir Alexander Bustamante, but she was a heroine in her own right, having been a stalwart in the trade union movement in the 1930s.

Lady Bustamante remained engaged throughout her active life and even up to her death she was a Trustee of the Jamaica Labour Party and an honourary Treasurer of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU). Jamaicans reserved a special place in their hearts for “Lady B” and she enjoyed the love and adoration of Jamaicans from all walks of life and all political persuasions.

A Book of Condolence will be opened at the Consulate General of Jamaica 767 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017, 2nd Floor during the period, 3-7 August 2009 between the hours of 10: 00 am to 12:00 pm.
The funeral service for Lady Bustamante will be held at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Liguanea, Kingston on Saturday, August 8, starting at 1:00 pm. Jamaica will also observe Saturday, August 8 as a national day of mourning.
