UN Urged to Examine Assistance Protocol to Vulnerable States

United NationsPermanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Faith Innerarity, has appealed to the United Nations, to re-examine its assistance protocol to member states deemed most vulnerable as a result of the global financial crisis.

She said that within the context of the current global crisis, and the challenges to social development, expenditure on essential human capital and protection of the vulnerable, should be enhanced and not compromised.

Mrs. Innerarity was addressing a panel discussion on the impact of the global crisis on social development, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City last week.

JAMAICAN INMATES DONATE CASH TO HURRICANE RELIEF

New YOrk JISConsul General of Jamaica in New York, Mrs. Geneive Brown Metzger has called on the Jamaican community in the USA to remember those nationals who are incarcerated at this time.

In an emotional address to inmates at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in UpState New York, on Friday, January 30, 2009, Mrs. Brown Metzger said that the Consulate will continue to reach out where necessary and possible.

She described as “an incredible generous gesture,” the presentation of a check for just over $1,100.00 from the inmates at the medium security facility who are members of the Caribbean African Unity (CAU) organization to be used for hurricane relief and rehabilitation in Jamaica.

OLYMPIC SPRINTER SIGNS BOOTS FOR NYC CHARITY

Garry Williams2008 Olympic Sprint phenom Usain Bolt of Jamaica, has given a boost to the fund-raising efforts of the New York-based Children of Jamaica Outreach (COJO), signing three pairs of sneakers which are to be auctioned.

The sneakers, donated by Puma, are part of a limited edition produced in commemoration of Bolt’s world record of 9.72 seconds clocked at the Reebok Grand Prix in May 2008, just prior to his amazing performance in August 2008 in the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
