The Ministry of Health’s vector control programme in the Corporate Area has been intensified in the wake of a sporadic case of the mosquito-borne disease malaria.
The Ministry Monday confirmed that a 17-year-old girl in New Haven, St. Andrew had been confirmed as having the disease.
The Ministry said there is no need for alarm as periodic outbreaks are expected until the country is again rid of the disease.
Director of Health Promotion and Protection in the Ministry Dr. Eva Lewis-Fuller told RJR News that the increased vector control programme will begin immediately.
Malaria is transmitted by the anopheles mosquito.
The symptoms include intermittent fever, chills, headaches, nausea and muscle pain.
Just under 400 cases of the disease were reported following an outbreak in December 2006.
Most of the cases were found in Kingston and St. Andrew.
