New Recordings Keep Bling Dawg Busy On The Local Circuit

Dancehall artist Bling Dawg who is a member of the highly successful Bounty Killer lead Alliance which also boast the likes of high riding Dancehall acts Mavado & Busy Signal is very confident that this year will be his year. The super talented lyricist who is now under the management of Byron Murray (CEO of In The Streets Records), has been very busy in the studios recording several singles for top producers such as Don Coleone (“Grudge”), Shane Brown (“Battle Field”), Daseca (“V.I.P” feat. Busy Signal) & Leftside (“Come On” feat. Brick & Lace).

Bling has also been very busy on stage chalking up a series of good reviews for his performances, on events such as the recently up a held Follow Di Arrow. He also dished out another exciting performance at the finals of his Bling Dawg Football league on Sunday March 16th at Poincianna Park, Fariyhill, Portland.

RETV goes global

Just one year after being acquired by media giant RJR Communications Group, local cable television company Reggae Entertainment Television (RETV) has embarked on an aggressive drive to penetrate the International market via satellite.

Kimani Robinson, chief executive officer of RETV, disclosed to the Business Observer yesterday that “over $7 million” was invested by the company in a satellite which services the Caribbean, North America, Latin America and Western Europe. He said that RETV’s expansion initiative has already begun in the region.

“RETV’s first step in its expansion mode has been in the Caribbean, and since November last year, is now being viewed in Caribbean territories, including Trinidad & Tobago, the British Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Dominica, Antigua, St Vincent and St Maarten. The station is now a growing brand in the Caribbean as it continues to add other Caribbean territories,” said Robinson.

New senior team at Jamaica Producers

The company has signalled that its new team has to be “aggressive” in going after market share.

The appointment to senior management positions of Paul Bates as managing director of Serious Food Company, Rolf Simmonds and Charles Czerkawski is part of that programme.

Bates will, at mid-year, take up a new appointment as managing director of subsidiary Serious Food Company, replacing Vince Prince who has been acting in the post.

The prepared-food component of JPG is the largest operating business by revenue, but the segment suffered losses of $301.9 million in the company’s third quarter in 2007. Continue reading New senior team at Jamaica Producers

Jamaica’s first woman DPP – Paula Llewellyn creates history

layout1_1_pcm3slallewelam.jpgThe former senior deputy DPP succeeds Kent Pantry, QC, who retired last month at the age of 60, but who remained in the job until yesterday.

Llewellyn, who takes over as DPP today, had acted twice in the top prosecutorial job. She is described by her colleagues as a fearless and hard-working prosecutor.

“I am humbled having been afforded the opportunity to serve in this position,” she told The Gleaner yesterday afternoon. She said she wished her predecessor well.

“I have always loved the public service and giving service to members of the public. They pay my salary and, therefore, deserve to have the best possible prosecutorial legal service that I can give as a prosecuting attorney,” she added. NEW JAMAICAN WRITER SECURES INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING DEAL AFTER WiSPA PRIZE COMPETITION

WiSPA 2006 finalist, Helen Williams, is having her award winning entry published by London company, A & C Black Publishers Ltd. The story ‘Finding My Roots’ is featured in an anthology entitled ‘All in the Family’ which is due to be released in May 2008. The contract was secured after WILDE Network promoted the short story to several publishers in the UK. This is just one the numerous benefits of entering the annual WiSPA Creative Writing Prize competition; other prizes include cash, laptops, books and vouchers.

The WiSPA Creative Writing Prize which is set to become one of Jamaica’s most prestigious arts awards is hosted by UK company WILDE Network Limited in partnership with DMA (Ja) Ltd. The competition is the central feature of the annual WiSPA Literary Retreat, which brings together women from the US, UK and Jamaica for two weeks of creative writing workshops. The free workshops will be taking place from 24th November – 8th December 2008 at Jackies-on-the-reef in Negril.
