Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited (C&WJ) pumps $2.8 billion in 120 cell towers

source: jamaicagleaner.com – Telecommunications provider Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited (C&WJ) is spending $2.8 billion to erect 120 new cellular towers over 18 months, to upgrade its mobile and broadband services.

The cell towers, also known as telecommunication base stations, will be deployed islandwide, but a review of planning approvals over the past few months indicates that the majority will be located in the parishes of St. Ann, St. Elizabeth and St. Catherine.

Boost

The programme will boost C&WJ’s cell sites to more than 600. But this number is still far behind its chief rival competitor Digicel Jamaica Limited which has over 1,000 sites islandwide.

Beenie a wanted man

Source: JamaicaGleaner.com - Resident Magistrate Owen Parkins yesterday issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of deejay Beenie Man after he failed to appear in the Civil Division of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The deejay, whose real name is Moses Davis, was booked to appear before RM Parkins yesterday to answer to charges of tax evasion, due to his alleged failure to pay his income tax. RM Parkins, clearly upset by Beenie Man’s failure to honour the court date, told the court “no one is above the law, not even me.” He also wondered aloud how the deejay could miss a court date that was publicly mentioned on television and radio.

The ‘Doctor’ reportedly owes the Government $29.29 million in back taxes and $18.64 million in penalties, bringing the outstanding amount to $47.93 million.

Shady deal – Probe ordered into free Cuban light bulb distribution in Jamaica

Source: JamaicaGleaner.com - THE CONTRACTOR General and the Auditor General have been asked to investigate the circumstances under which the last People’s National Party (PNP) government accrued a bill of more than $276.5 million in the distribution of free Cuban light bulbs.

In a statement to Parliament yesterday, Clive Mullings, Minister of Energy, Mining and Telecommunications, said the matter requires the “most thorough investigation”.

“Accordingly, the Government has requested the Auditor General to conduct a detailed audit of all expenditure in respect of this project,” Mr. Mullings said.

He added, “We have also invited the Contractor General to investigate the circumstances in which such huge payments were made to these suppliers without the required procurement procedures being followed.”
